What do volunteers do?

The primary responsibility of a volunteer is to support and emphasize personal growth and development, and motivate the campers in building skills and relationships. After receiving a period of orientation, they will be prepared to assist with the different sports and recreational activities each camp has. Coaches are the backbone of any sports camp. Without them, there is no camp and no training. The hiring process is where it all begins and there are some things that should definitely be done.

After receiving applications for the coaching positions, the interview process will help weed them out and hopefully give you a good handful to finalize your choices from. But before doing that, the next step is to run a background check on each one of them. Whether your camp is for youth or adults, you cannot take the risk or the liability of having a coach that may be on the sex offender registry or have a criminal history. Coaching your coaches is one of the most crucial parts of running a great sports camp. Here are some ways to help your staff learn, understand, and buy in to your system of how how your camp is run and how you want them to coach.

Get them involved in the process

Get your staff involved in the creative process. Buy in is so much easier when everyone (key coaches) feels like they are and will be part of creating and implementing the process. Teach it to them like a teacher would. So often we forget that our coaches often learn best by doing not just listening. Have them stand up, go through the motions as a player and a coach.

Train the coaches

Put them through a physical training camp to ensure that they are all in physical condition to be able to coach others. It’s not just about what they know and the skills they can teach. They should be able to demonstrate and train right alongside their campers. Training your coaches will help get them in ready for a challenging time.

Dress rehearsal

Start early with coaching real-time practice. We will be out on the field very soon practicing how calls will be made and what happens in between. Coach you coaches on exactly what you want to see done at certain times and in specific situations.

Sweat the Small Stuff

If you don’t discuss it, chances are it won’t happen. Be very specific with coaches about where and what you want and how you want it done. Once they know that information and how to put it into practice, they will then start to think like you. They will find ways to make the things work even better within the system.

Step Back

Once things are in place give the coaches some latitude. Step back and let them run their training and then have a debriefing session after that. Nothing teaches better than raw experiences so build those into your camp plans.

Hip Raises for Leg and Core Strength

Hip raises are the exercises that shape your butt and make you less susceptible to low back pain. These exercises train the muscles of your glutes and hamstrings. In addition, they are also considered as great core exercises since your abdominal and lower-back muscles are required to stabilize your body for the entire movement.

Main move

Starting Position (A)
Lie on the floor as shown in the diagram. Your feet should be flat on the floor.
(a) Generate the force with your heels instead of your toes. You can place your feet so that your toes rice off the floor to make it easier.
(b) You arms should be placed out to your body at 45-degree angles.

Second Move (B)
Initiate the movement by raising your hips so your body forms a straight line from your shoulder to your knees. While it is done, hold the position up to five seconds followed by lowering your body back to the starting position.
(a) Make sure you push your body with your heels, not the toes.
(b) Contract your glutes muscle to lift your hips.

Variation #1: Weighted Hip Raise

Perform this exercise by adding a weight plate on your hips to increase the difficulty.

Variation #3: Hip Raise with Knee Squeeze

You can place a rolled-up towel or cushion between your knees while performing standard hip raise. Then, hold it there for the entire movement. Make sure the cushion does not slip as you raise your hips until your shoulders and your knees are alighted.

If you fail to hold the object while you are raising your hips, this indicates that your hip adductors or groin muscles are needed to improve. Performing this exercise regularly without letting the cushion or towel to fall to the floor can help you to strengthen these muscles.

Variation #3 Hip Raise with Knee Press-Out

Use a 20-inch mini-band and put it above your knees as shown in the diagram. While performing this exercise, avoid your knees from touching each other.

(a) Pushing outward against a band increases the activation of your gluteus maximus and gluteus medius.

Variation #4: Marching Hip Raise

Raise your hip as shown in the diagram. After that, move one knee toward your chest and lower back to the original position. Repeat the movement with another knee alternatively.

Variation #5: Hip Raise with Feet on a Swiss Ball

Position your lower legs on a Swiss ball while performing the movement.

Exercises are excellent for keeping the leg and core muscles strong, but there are times when they aren’t enough.
